Known as the Demand Notes of 1861, large size currency is the first and earliest issue of U.S. currency as we know it. Issued in denominations of $5, $10 and $20, large size notes were authorized by the Congressional Acts of July 17 and August 5, 1861.
Unique in U.S. Currency, large size notes do not bear the Treasury Seal or the actual names of the Treasurer and Register of the Treasury. Also, the serial number is imprinted on these notes only once.
